How to Add a Recommendations Box to Your Facebook Page

Social endorsement is one of the best ways to grow your reach on social media sites like Facebook. That’s why it’s important to post updates regularly — whenever you publish an update and one of your fans likes it, her friends will see that “like” and be more inclined to take a look.

Testimonials are another powerful social endorsement tool. If you’re buying something that costs more than $100, chances are you’ll be reading online reviews before making your purchase. So what if you can add a review feature to your Facebook page? It turns out that you can — it’s called a “Recommendations” box.

Here’s what the Recommendations box will look like on your Facebook page:

But more impressively, here’s what the recommendation itself will look like on the news feeds of your reviewer’s friends:

Now how’s THAT for social endorsement?

Many Facebook pages have this feature by default — all it requires is the right page category and entering a legit mailing address. But many pages don’t, and if yours doesn’t, getting it to appear can be a little confusing! So here’s how to add the Recommendation box in three easy steps.

Only a couple specific page types include the recommendation feature:

Local BusinessesCompanies & Organizations

So if your page is promoting an actor, sports team, novel, etc., you may not be able to have this feature on your page. However, if your page is promoting something that you have in the Brands & Products or Website & Blogs category, you can easily switch to the Companies & Organizations category, as long as you’re willing to make your address public. U Stand Out was originally in the Brands & Products – Website category, but I switched it to Companies & Organizations – Internet/Software category. It’s not much of a stretch, and now I have this awesome recommendations feature.

This part’s tricky only because it doesn’t always update right away! Ultimately, you want the address section to look like this, with the map included:

And then make sure that the option “Show this map on the page” is checked. Once you check this box, the recommendations box will automatically appear on your Facebook page. There is no extra step you need to take to add the recommendations box.

But Facebook can take a few hours to process your address in their system. So at first, you may not be able to get the map to appear — and that’s ok. Just save your updates, and check back in a few hours.

Once you check that checkbox to show the map on your page, it will become your 2nd app tab image by default. Just rearrange your app tab images to customize your ordering however you’d like. For detailed instructions on how to rearrange your app tab images, click here.

The feature on the settings page in which you enter your address and a map appears can be very finicky if you’ve chosen Companies & Organizations as your page category. If you can’t get a map to appear, temporarily choose the category Local Businesses and re-enter your address. This should work. Then switch back to your Companies & Organizations category, and your map will stick.

Also, remember that your page needs to be part of the Local Businesses or Companies & Organization category in order for the recommendations box to automatically appear on your page.
